Dr. Corlin Jewell, Winner of the EMRA/Rosh Review One Step Further Award

We are proud to announce the 2020 winner of the EMRA/Rosh Review One Step Further Award as Dr. Corlin Jewell of University of Wisconsin Hospitals & Clinics.

The One Step Further award is given to a resident who exemplifies the ideals of continuous learning and self-improvement, and who takes it upon themselves to go “one step further” to improve a weakness or accelerate a strength.

Dr. Jewell’s interest in education has driven his activities in residency. His Assistant Residency Program Director, Dr. Benjamin Schnapp, writes in a letter of recommendation, “After participating in multiple teaching opportunities with medical students during his intern year, he recognized that he wanted to augment his skills in education and cleared time in his busy resident schedule to attend the prestigious American College of Emergency Physicians Teaching Fellowship in Dallas, Texas. Upon his return, he wanted to continue to build upon the foundation that he had established as a medical educator and sought out my mentorship to complete a research project on the value on post-residency interview thank you notes in emergency medicine during his 2nd year of residency, resulting in a first author publication in the Western Journal of Emergency Medicine. While many residents are comfortable taking direction or tackling a piece of a project, Dr. Jewell took charge throughout, successfully navigating the project from initial literature search through manuscript writing and revision, deftly guiding a team of much more senior collaborators.”

“He is now taking his scholarly work to the next level by participating in the Medical Education Research Certificate program through the Council of Emergency Medicine Residency Directors, collaborating with other early career educators on a multi-institution education research project. To diversify his educator’s toolkit, he has also found time to teach himself podcasting, and is approximately halfway through reviewing each of the landmark articles in the Academic Life in Emergency Medicine 52 Articles in 52 Weeks series, with plans to distribute these reviews online so that all residents may benefit. He has continued to dedicate himself to significant teaching roles within our department to significant acclaim, serving as chief resident and mentor, and spearheading an overhaul of our resident teaching block. Next year, he will take on the role of Interim Assistant Program Director as part of his Education Fellowship here at the University of Wisconsin, as well as starting coursework in a demanding Masters in Health Professions Education Course to continue to expand his knowledge base and skillset.”

Dr. Jewell was recognized at the Council of Residency Directors in Emergency Medicine (CORD) Academic Assembly and awarded $1,000.
